Censorship is the tool of those who have the need to hide actualities from themselves and from others. Their fear is only their inability to face what is real, and I can’t vent any anger against them; I only feel this appalling sadness. Somewhere in their upbringing, they were shielded against the total facts of our existence.- Charles Bukowski
I’m just a simple girl who likessimple things. I just want the world to make sense, that’s all I ask. Yet I can’t even roll in peace. I can’t leave my house without being confronted by nine people explaining to me how Trump’s evil master plan is the extermination of “people of color” in America. I try to gracefully exit the conversation before my blood pressure gets too high, but it’s like I got some internal force pulling me back to the conversation.
You see when someone says something inaccurate or untruthful I have to confront them. I just have to. While this doesn’t always make for great conversation, it does create inspiration for my blog.
By this point we’ve all heard that Google is on one. Instead of out right banning content, YouTube has decided to hit creators in their wallet. While watching my favorite Anime Man (What? I like anime. Leave me alone.) I was heart broken to learn that he too was hit by the Adpocolpse!
The hardest thing about growing up is learning just how few people you can trust. Right now none of those people work for Google (just ignore the Adsense ads, that doesn’t mean you can’t trust me!).
I used to love YouTube. It was such a great platform for connecting people with an audience. How else do you get paid to have people watch you play video games while you shout obscenities at the screen? Or exploit your relationship for subscribers? We can’t all be a Kardashian.
Except with YouTube we can! Or at least we could. Now Google has gone full big brother and not even bothering to hide it. The problem with humans is we never imagine the worst happening to us. It is always someone else that bad things will happen to because deep down we think that bad things only happen to those that deserve it.
This shortsighted rationality always leads to destruction and it’s how the bad guys win. They’re not counting on human’s animal nature, they’re counting on human rationality.
Google is going down a path that I cannot follow
Do I want to see ISIS behead people on YouTube? Definitely not. Do I want to see three men make love to a goat? Or watch a racist rant about black people being sent from hell to destroy us? I don’t want to watch any of that, I don’t even want to see it.
Except is that really what we’re talking about? The are experts in hyperbole. Every decision is based on the most extreme hypothetical, even if it’s an exception. Liberalism has become the dogma of extremes, there is no middle ground anymore. Do you remember when the creed of pro-choice was “safe ,legal, and rare?” It will never be enough, the goal posts are always moved.
An essay by Bethany Mandel inThe Federalist sums up the phenomena very nicely,
The Left has shown the totalitarian manner in which it exacts support, or at least silence, from everyday Americans.
The New World Logic is one of false premises and equivalencies. I’m sure many of you have felt it, maybe it’s why you are at loath to express any kind of dissent. Mandel demonstrates the syllogisms of leftist logic,
“if you are against abortion, therefore you are anti-woman”;
“if you oppose same-sex marriage, therefore you hate people attracted to the same sex.”
I’m sure you could think of a dozen more to add (affirmative action, welfare, gun control, hell just say you voted for Trump!), we’ve reached a boiling point in this country. Maybe you feel comfortable with the these syllogisms, but what happens in two years when the goal post is moved again? Are you so confident that you will be on the right side of the new line?
So where does censorship come in?
Google (and every single progressive corporation like it) are the enforcers of New World Logic. Though they claim to use their power to censor information is for the people, really they’re the thought police.
The Executive Chairman of Alphabet (Google’s parent company) said so himself.
Well, when you use Google, do you get more than one answer? Of course you do. Well, that’s a bug. We have more bugs per second in the world. We should be able to give you the right answer just once… and we should never be wrong.- Eric Schmidt
I wonder what the right answer would be? And so many people hate the moral absolutist Christians of days past, but it sounds to me that Mr. Schmidt himself is an absolutist. I guess you can do whatever you want as long as your motive is anything but religion.
And in case you’re tempted to call me a conspiracy theorist (which isn’t even an insult btw) and that this is some over reaction. “Google is private corporation, they can censor whoever they want!” Do you really think Google is doing this completely independent from the government?
The government is a sneaky little bastard when it wants to be. It loves getting private actors to do its dirty work.
Google is more than capable of trading favors with the government. Just look at this email exchange between Mr. Eric Schmidt and John Podesta former chairman of the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign.
I met with Eric Schmidt tonight. As David reported, he’s ready to fund, advise recruit talent, etc. He was more deferential on structure than I expected. Wasn’t pushing to run through one of his existing firms. Clearly wants to be head outside advisor, but didn’t seem like he wanted to push others out. Clearly wants to get going…
Why in the world would an executive in Alphabet work with a Presidential hopeful? What do you think Schmidt wanted in return?
Now I know how people like to use Google to answer their questions. For instance, when you thought to yourself, “It can’t possibly be true that Trump is as racist as the media tells me,” you would be correct, however Google wouldn’t let you know that. Even Fake News CNN says as much.
Google doesn’t just protect their favorite political candidates. In March, lawyers representing the Church of Scientology requested that Google stop linking to a Norwegian anti-Scientology site called Operation Clambake. As you can imagine, Google acquiesced.
Google has shown no signs of slowing down
They quietly launched Project Owl, the goal of which was to devise a method to “demote misleading, false and offensive articles online,” according to a Bloomberg report.
The Alphabet Inc. company is making a rare, sweeping change to the algorithm behind its powerful search engine to demote misleading, false and offensive articles online. Google is also setting new rules encouraging its “raters” — the 10,000-plus staff that assess search results — to flag web pages that host hoaxes, conspiracy theories and what the company calls “low-quality” content.
They must have been real pee pee hurt when Hills lost the election. Indeed 2016 is the justification for such a crackdown.
If Google is so staunch in it’s censorship of the public, can you imagine what it’s like to work for them? Oh wait we don’t have to imagine, a now ex-employee told us.
In a memo penned by one James Damore (a Google employee who was fired after he wrote a scathing internal memo criticizing the company’s diversity policies) he tells exactly what it’s like to work for Google. (I guess life isn’t all head massages and nap times and Google.)
We have… this monolithic culture where anyone with a dissenting view can’t even express themselves. Really, it’s like being gay in the 1950s. These conservatives have to stay in the closet and have to mask who they really are. And that’s a huge problem because there’s open discrimination against anyone who comes out of the closet as a conservative.
It is no surprise what Julian thinks about Google. His meeting years ago with Eric Schmidt showed him just how much the seemingly innocuous Mr. Schmidt is more like the duplicitous Mr. Ripley than he ever imagined.
The Adpocolypse is just one clip in Google’s chamber
YouTube is notorious for being vague and deliberately uncommunicative in their policies. They simply give no clear line between offensive and acceptable content. When a creator is demonetized for inappropriate content they are often left wondering why. That is what makes adpocolypse particularly egregious.
Back in April YouTube updated its policies to get more control over which videos can make money from ads, requiring for the first time that channels reach 10,000 lifetime views before they can start to generate revenue. Channels also have to go through a new application process to be approved for ads in the partner program.
Many creators have woken up one day to find that videos that were once bringing in revenue were hit with a little symbol that indicated that their old content will not be making any more ad revenue.
This was done with little to no explanation, and though they could appeal, who knows how long the process could take. So what does it take to get you videos demonetized?
If you so much as mentioned something that could be deemed controversial, you were going to take a hit in your revenue. Even something as simple as mentioning the existence of guns will get you demonetized. Geez first it’s guns, what’s next? Cars? Cars do kill more people than guns after all.
YouTube’s most popular personality PewDiePie, Felix Kjellberg, called this brand boycott “the adpocalypse.”
In case any of you were still under the illusion that liberalism was in any way today’s counter culture, well I don’t know what rock you live under but it must be nice there! It is wasn’t liberals who were targeted by the IRS, and for the most part it won’t be liberals who face demonetization from YouTube.
When someone as sincere and straight forward as former Congressman Ron Paul is hit with a censor, that censor clearly doesn’t stand form much. Mr. Paul’s online news program, Liberty Report, lost advertising revenue for a number of videos which Paul recently posted.
Daniel McAdams, co-producer of the Ron Paul Liberty Report, told RT America,
We have no violence, no foul language, no political extremism, no hate or intolerance…Our program is simply a news analysis discussion from a libertarian and antiwar perspective.
American’s can’t be exposed to that! What would happen to our kids if they learned of a world where we are not constantly at war? I can’t even imagine!
After the Adpocalypse, even some of YouTube‘s biggest earners reported making 80 percent less than they usually did on a day to day basis. Ethan and Hila Klein, who helm h3h3productions, said that they are making 15% of pre-boycott earnings.
Do y’all remember when what Google’s motto used to be? If you don’t, try to guess. I’ll give you a hint, think progressive meets 14 year old girl. It was: Don’t be Evil.
When forming its parent company Alphabet, Google dropped its old motto, “Don’t be evil,” and exchanged it with, “Do the right thing.” They wanted to still be aggravatingly vague while still concise but still maintaining that aura of smug self righteousness that is now synonymous with Google.
I don’t know though. You tell me, is Google living up to its own creed? How do we stop Google from drowning out our voices? Comment and let me know.
